Colophon

Every book used to end with a note about how it was made. This is that note.

Set in

Bricolage Grotesque
Headings. A variable grotesque whose narrow weights are frankly a bit anxious, which felt right.
Fraunces
Body text, with its SOFT and WONK axes turned away from their sensible defaults. That is where the slightly wobbly serifs come from.
LXGW WenKai TC 霞鶩文楷
All Chinese text, including every poem. A kai face derived from Fontworks’ Klee One — it looks written rather than set, which matters more on this site than anywhere else.
Caveat
The margin scrawls, in biro blue.
JetBrains Mono
Dates, code, and the small capital labels.

Built with

Astro, with React only for the one canvas animation on the physics page. Tailwind plus a hand-written stylesheet. Math by KaTeX. Traditional-to-Simplified conversion by OpenCC, in the browser, so the poems ship once and convert on demand.

The ruled paper, the red margin line and the wobbly boxes are all CSS — gradients and an abused border-radius. The doodles are inline SVG paths with deliberately misaligned control points. No illustration files, nothing to load.

It builds to static files and is copied to a small VPS over SSH by a shell script, where Caddy serves it. There is no CI, no platform, and no database. Source is on GitHub.

The seal

The red block beside the poems is a name seal, 印章. Printed collections carry one in vermilion seal paste; here it is just a border and a colour, which is cheating, but the colour is right.
